Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
