Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered multiple other smeared cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say initial examinations indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in association with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to unravel the case" and have asked to the residents for information.
An important official stated the attack rendered him stunned and had to be resolved quickly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing attack five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a gunman targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
