EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
