Wolff Preparing to Divest Shareholding Valuing Mercedes F1 at £4.6 Billion

Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction estimates Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – after McLaren were valued at £3.5bn in a change of ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos Group, who both hold a third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We are providing no comment on this. The governance of the team stays unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Financial Growth

The deal would represent a significant increase in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos Group bought its share for £208m in 2022.

The rise reflects the growth in market values of F1 teams in the past few years due to the growing popularity of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed more than $630m (£458m) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Present Performance

Mercedes are runner-up in the team standings, behind McLaren, with three races remaining this season.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 grands prix so far and is fourth in the drivers' championship after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight consecutive team titles and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
